Alnwick Class 2022 - 2023

Beach Day - Tuesday 4th July
Wow - Alnwick Castle Class and soon to be new Alnwick Castle Class...we were so unbelievably proud of you today!  You did such a wonderful job for your Beach Day transition and we even did some wonderful rock pooling as we knew the tides would be good.

After our super walking to the beach we had a morning of 'Rockpool Safari".

We talked about Rockpools and creatures that live in them – we looked at pictures of the most common rockpool creatures, we explained the difficulties of living there and the how to treat everything respectfully and gently.  Then after recapping our health and safety talk for safe rockpooling it was off for lots of investigating and exploring.  We were great detectives and managed to find all sorts from shore crabs, hermit crabs, lobster tails and so much more.

We thought about what we had found whilst having our fruit and listening to a favourite story 'Sharing a Shell'.

We then then finished the morning by collecting barnacle shells along the shoreline and creating a special craft with our string.

After a well deserved lunch and some more wonderful stories helping us think about how to look after our planet we headed to the little beach for some afternoon fun.

We worked in our teams to create our own Beach Art - an imaginary rockpool.  So in our groups we worked together to dig, sculpt and collects shells, rocks and seaweed to create a perfect Rockpool.  We took it in turns explaining to the class what we had made developing our speaking and listening skills.

To finish the day we had a sneaky little play at the play park on our walk back and once again showed great stamina and maturity finishing just in time for the end of the school day.

Everyone did a brilliant job of showing us that you are ready for your new adventures after the summer and we are so excited for you.  Well done Alnwick Castle Class and Preschool - such a wonderful and fabulous beach day.

Beach Day - Tuesday 23rd May
Yet another wonderful Beach day - how lucky are we as the weather could not have been kinder, sunny but not too hot! Today it was themed all about our whole school project 'Dream to Change the World' and the achievements of John La Rose.

After a wonderful walk spotting and observing lots of wildlife like heron, goslings, eider ducks, gorse, broom, green alkanet and many butterflies.  We sat on the hillside of Brecken Hill and re-read 'Dream to Change the World.  We thought about the key words of diversity, curiosity and fairness as well as thinking about John La Rose's achievements and how he followed his interests, skills and passions in order to create a positive change in the world.

Our first challenge was to see if we could make a positive change by planting a tree.  We worked together to each plant a hawthorn tree and can now proudly keep checking on them as they grow through time.

Next we headed to the beach.  We know that John carefully observed, drew and wrote about the world he saw around him in Trinidad.  In groups we created all the places and things that are important to us.  There was great team work and some super explanations about why we liked our favourite things.

After a well deserved lunch and stories about Carnivals and a bit of the diverse culture in Trinidad we headed back out to the beach.  Our afternoon challenge was to work in our groups to make a better world, use our imaginations and think about fun things that we could have.  There were lots of different and varied ideas...perhaps you could think at home how to make the world a better place?

As a treat to finish we put our teamwork and caring skills into practise by having a lovely play at the park.  A great end to our beach day.

Beach Day - Thursday 30th March
Wow Alnwick Castle Class have had a fantastic beach day!
We started off our day with a walk down to the woods, watching out for frogspawn in the pond and spotting birds in the trees. We could hear lots of different birdsongs! We also spotted some sheep being fed in the field and a brave goose who snuck up to pinch some breakfast too!
Once we got to the woods Bridie told us about different birds nests and how they were made with different nesting materials. We then put what we learnt to use and made our own bird nests using sticks, moss and mud.
On the beach we made our own Easter eggs and Easter bunnies, using treasures such as shells and seaweed to decorate them. We braved the rain before heading to Hindmarsh Hall for our lunch and some stories.
We were very pleased to see the sun shining as we set back off to the beach. We collected limpet shells to create our necklaces before creating some of our favourite nursey rhymes in the sand.
We are super proud of you all Alnwick Castle Class, you represented our school so brilliantly in our local community.

Beach Day Tuesday 14th February

How lucky are we with such a glorious day for a Space (Valentines) Beach day - there was definitely love for that tropical Winter sunshine. So special for another wonderful beach day for Alnwick Castle Class and once again, everyone did so well, did themselves proud and we had a great space adventure.

Our day began with a sunny winter walk to the beach. We stopped to notice the high tide with the River Aln and looked for wildlife and we spotted so many geese, heron, red shank and lots of rooks.

At the beach we began our first space mission to make a space rocket. We thought about all the features it would need and functions it could do. There were some brilliant space crafts made in our crews. We had a quick fruit break whilst reminding ourselves about all the planets in our solar system. Then it was back to some team work to create our whole solar system. We thought how to make each planet unique to its true features and how we could represent them. We then did a 'show and tell' to the class about our solar system.

We made it to to the Hindmarsh Hall for a much needed rest and some lunch. Some yummy pack lunches and some space stories helped us recoup our energy for the afternoon activities ahead. The 'Smeds and the Smoos' was a big hit and 'You Choose your Space Adventure' involved much participation and ideas from everyone. We even finished lunch by singing our 'Family of the Sun' song.

In the afternoon, inspired by our space topic we thought about life on other planets. We had some amazing aliens, creatures and homes for our aliens. The team work and collaboration was brilliant and there was some super speaking skills explaining to the class everything that they had created.

We were so proud of Alnwick Class - great listening, looking after their partner and doing some great learning, we rewarded everyone with a play at the park! A worthy reward for a very deserving class - well done, Alnwick Castle Class, we cannot wait to take you again!

Beach Day - Tuesday 1st November

What a lovely first beach day of the year as Alnwick Castle Class. Everyone did so well and we had a great autumnal adventure.

Our day began with a sunny autumn walk to the beach. We stopped to notice the tide with the River Aln and looked for wildlife and we spotted a White Egret. At the beach we had various autumnal challenges to complete in our groups including creating a team castle followed by a scarecrow. We then headed to 'Gruffalo Wood' for a pumpkin story, our fruit break and to do a bit of autumnal identification. We used our sticky holding boards to collect different leaves. We looked at art by Andy Goldsworthy and discussed how he made his art using natural resources and that some of his art is abstract. Using him as an inspiration, we made our own collaborative projects - we had some spirals and even dragon eyes!

We made it to to the Hindmarsh Hall for a much needed rest and some lunch. Some yummy pack lunches and another two pumpkin stories helped us recoup our energy for the afternoon activities ahead.

Inspired by the recent harvest festival idea of farmers harvesting our food - we created our own farm! The team work and collaboration was brilliant and there was some super speaking skills explaining to the class everything that they had created as a little 'show and tell' at the end.

We were so proud of Alnwick Class - great listening, looking after their partner and doing some great learning, we rewarded everyone with a play at the park! A worthy reward for a very deserving class - well done, Alnwick Castle Class, we cannot wait to take you again!
